Not long after the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors concluded its divestiture demise meeting during the afternoon of Tuesday, October 27th, later that evening the Rohnert Park City Council [http://www.rpcity.org] also weighed in on a related matter when its new representative to the AB 939 Local Task Force (LTF) was selected.
Chris Rogers, a recent UC-Santa Barbara graduate and current SSU student pursuing his masters in public administration was chosen by a divided Council, with Vice Mayor Belforte joined by Councilmembers Mackenzie and Stafford in favor, while Mayor Breeze and Councilmember Callinan were opposed.

Other candidates for the appointment included former Councilmember Dawna Gallagher and former City Manager Carl Leivo.

Congratulations to Mr. Rogers for being willing to serve his hometown of Rohnert Park and all of Sonoma County in this little understood, but nonetheless important position.

We need fresh faces and ideas to find creative solutions for our common challenges. The divestiture debacle is only one of far too many issues where the County of Sonoma has failed to cooperate with other public entities and the general public in order to find workable solutions for problems we all face. Instead, failure to timely engage with those needed to help has led to problems becoming worse, thus creating the current atmosphere of disillusionment and mistrust.

Let’s hope that this appointment by the Rohnert Park City Council to the LTF, which reports to the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, will help lead to meaningful changes for the better regarding important solid waste management issues confronting us all.
