Among the recent public service opportunities provided to me over the the past few years was being a member of the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District Advisory Committee. During that time our committee reviewed many exciting projects to help maintain and enhance our quality of life in Sonoma County by providing agricultural, recreational and natural resource open space protection. It included visits to stunning sites under consideration for acquisition. The most enjoyable visit was to the Jenner Headlands.

It’s wonderful to learn that the Sonoma Land Trust closed escrow today on the 5,630 acres purchase, the largest single conservation land transaction in Sonoma County history. In addition to the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District funding which is derived from voter-approved sales tax revenue, many other organizations helped Sonoma Land Trust secure the millions needed to permanently protect the Jenner Headlands. Considering the economic crisis we are in and only slowly working ourselves out from under, completing this complex deal now is particularly impressive.

Although access to the public onto portions of the site slated to be open on a regular basis will take time to implement, some guided hikes will begin early in 2010.  The Jenner Headlands will be well worth your time to visit.  Thanks and congratulations to the Sonoma Land Trust and all its funding partners!

We of Jenner are particularly pleased with this acquisition. Not only is the Jenner Headlands natural environment now guaranteed a preservation that will benefit many (as against a development that might benefit but a few), Jenner itself benefits by having its Jenner Gulch watershed, sole source of the town’s water collection, preserved as it should be. The many who contributed can all be justifiably congratulated for their contribution to a project in which all benefit. As lead in acquisition, the Sonoma Land Trust is especially deserving of praise and support for its sensitivity in developing maintenance of what is now our common legacy.
